2010 Event Details

JANUARY

Photography Competition – Opens 1st Jan 9am – closes Sat 1st May 12pm, results announced Sat 22nd May 1pm-3pm

Free to enter competition. Theme – park nature / wildlife. Email entries to: parkfriends@hotmail.com

Send us your best photo’s of Victoria Park’s wildlife. There will be prizes for the best [as judged by the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford Group panel], and a display of all entries at the animal hunt event in May where the winners will be announced.

Bird Watch – Sat 31st Jan 201010am-12pm 

Free event. Suitable for all ages.  Meet at the community building. All equipment provided, although you may want to wear warm and waterproof clothing.  Come and take part in the RSPB’s big garden bird watch. Take a leisurely hour long stroll around the park recording numbers and types of birds you see, the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford Group will then send this info off to the RSPB so that they can build up a UK picture of our bird life. Then come back to the community building for a free drink, biscuit and a chat.

 

FEBRUARY

Wildlife Gardening – Spring – Sat 20th Feb 201010am-12pm 

Free event.  Suitable for all ages.  Meet at the community building. All equipment and refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford – although you may want to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting mucky or wet [it may rain!].  Come and help up build a mini-beast mansion in our wildlife garden.  This will help us along the way to achieving gold status in the “Big Wildlife Garden” by Natural England.  Free refreshments will be available from the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford.

 

MARCH

Community Clean-up Day – Sat 13th March 201011am-3pm 

Free event.  Suitable for all ages.  Meet at the community building.  Come along and do a spot of light gardening, cleaning or painting, or just come along and tell us what you think of the park and what improvements you would like to see. All welcome and any help is much appreciated. All equipment and refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford – although you may want to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting mucky or wet [it may rain!]. Hope to see you there.

Stargazing – Sat 27th March 20107pm-10pm 

Free event.  Meet at the community building at 7pm. Dress warmly with suitable sturdy footwear for wet weather.  Due to the late start of this event is only suitable for those aged 7 and over.  All children aged below 16 must be accompanied by an adult.  All equipment is provided.  This event is run in association with Graham Cliff, a local astronomer and light pollution expert and coincides with the “World Wildlife Funds Earth Hour” which runs from 8.30pm-9.30pm.  Earth hour asks everyone to switch off all lights for 1 hour to show they care about climate change, in doing so – there should be less light pollution and the stars should be easier to see.  This is the first time we are running this event, and we’re sure it will be both popular and fun. There will be free refreshments provided by the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford.  

APRIL

AGM/Celebration of 2009 Achievements – Thu 01st April 20107pm-9pm 

Meet at the community building. Please come along and have your say about how you would like the park to develop, see our plans and share your views on this valuable community resource. Perhaps you are interested in joining the committee or helping out at events – come along we would be pleased to meet you. There will be free refreshments provided by the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford.

Easter Eggstravaganza – Sat 03rd April 20101pm-3pm 

£1.00 to enter hunt and all children get an Easter Egg. Easter Bonnet Parade and Decorated Egg competitions with prizes for the best. Tombola, and races for the children including egg and spoon, skipping and the ever popular chukka-chicken – prizes for the winners. There will be free hot and cold drinks provided by the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford and they will be running a cake stall. 

History of Victoria Park – Sun 18th April 20101pm-3pm 

Free event.  Meet at the community building.  Suitable for all ages.  Come and look at a display of the Park’s history [as part of World heritage day].  See old maps showing the Park’s development and have a cup of tea with the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford, and discuss the future of his wonderful park.  Meet Stretford local History Society to find out more about the history of Stretford. There will be free refreshments provided by the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford.    

 MAY 

Moth Watch – Sat 15th May 20107pm-10pm 

Free event.  Meet at the community building at 7pm.  Dress warmly with suitable sturdy footwear for wet weather.  Due to the late start of this event is only suitable for those aged 7 and over.  All children aged below 16 must be accompanied by an adult.  All equipment is provided.  This event is run in association with The Manchester Museum and National Moth Night.  Come and identify moths that live in and around the park.  We will record types and numbers of these beautiful creatures and send them off to National Moth Night.  We will be using nets, moth traps and wine ropes – but no moths should be harmed.  This is a great excuse to see the park and it’s wildlife at dusk/night.  There will be free refreshments provided by the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford.

 

Animal Hunt – Sat 22nd May 20101pm-3pm 

£1.00 to enter hunt. Meet in the under 5′s play area.  The hunt is suitable for children under 7 years old.  Limited to 150 hunters – so first come – first served!!  Come and hunt the animals in the under 5′s play area and get a prize when you’ve found them all.  This is part of the International Day For Biological Diversity.  There will be free refreshments provided by the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford.  A display of all the photographs entered into our photo competition and the winners will be announced at this event. 

 

JUNE

Scrufts – Sat 5th June 20101pm-3pm 

Free event. Suitable for all ages. £1.00 entry fee per category for the dog show and dog agility course.  Meet on Victoria’s lawn and sign the dogs into their categories from 1pm.  This is a fun family event run as part of the National Family Week – dogs are part of our families too!  Come and bring your dog or watch, as dogs try out our most challenging agility course yet, to often hilarious outcomes.  The dogs then compete in the following fun categories, such as waggiest tail or best party trick and then a Champion of Champion will be picked and receive it’s trophy.  Prizes for all entrants.  Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford will be serving free refreshments and running a second hand book stall and raffle.

Start of Summer picnic – Sun 20th June 201012pm onwards

Free event.  Suitable for all ages.  Meet on grass outside community building.  Family picnic to celebrate the official Start of Summer [summer solstice] and Father’s Day.  Some refreshments will be provided by from the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford if you forget yours.

 

Insect and mini-beast hunt – Sat 26th June 201010am-12pm 

Free event.  Suitable for 4 – 11 years old accompanied by an adult.  Meet at the community building at 10am.  Wear wet weather gear if required, as we will be outside at times.  Come and meet the creepy crawlies that live in the park, as part of National Insect Week.   Refreshments and tombola will be available from the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford.

Beetle Drive – Sat 26th June 2010 -12.30pm-2.30pm

£1.00 to enter.  Suitable for those aged 6 and over.  Meet at the community building at 12.30.  This is a traditional family game where you aim to draw a beetle first.  The throw of the dice decides which bit of the beetle can be completed and it’s a race to finish first and claim the prize.  The winner then moves table to compete against another team.  The overall winner of the tournament wins a grand prize.  Refreshments will be available from the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford.

 

JULY

Family picnic – Sun 04th July 201012pm onwards

Free event.  Suitable for all ages.  Meet on the grass outside the community building.  American themed family picnic to coincide with America’s Independence Day. Live music from ‘Herb O’Flanigan and the Emotions’. Some refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford, if you forget yours.

Wildlife Gardening Summer – Sat 10th July 2010 10pm-12pm 

Free event.  Suitable for all ages.  Meet at the community building.  Come and carry out some wildlife garden projects in the park.  This will help us on our way to achieving gold status in the “Big Wildlife Garden” by Natural England. Free refreshments will be available from the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford. You may want to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting mucky or wet [it may rain!].   

Sports Spectacular – Sat 24th July 20101pm-4pm 

Free event. £1.00 to enter Duck Decathlon.  This is the sixth year for this event in Victoria Park. There will be sports equipment and or coaching available for football, tennis, badminton, hockey, cricket, table tennis, rounders. There will be garden games available to play.  There will be a tombola, second hand book stall, and a refreshment stall.  The Duck Decathlon will be run by the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford and involves 10 silly duck themed races for teams – with trophies for Gold, Silver and Bronze places. Last year this was an extremely popular event causing many laughs. The whole event is suitable for all ages as there is something for everyone to do – so come along and support the park and have fun at the same time.  This event is running as part of Love Parks Week.

Rounders – Every Wed 6pm-7pm from Wednesday from Wed 7th July – Wed 25th Aug 2010 [inclusive]

Free event.  Suitable from age 4 onwards.  We will be on the main football pitch with all the gear Come and join us for a game of rounders each week, weather permitting of course. Feel free to come and laugh at us oldies having a go – or indeed try and beat us if you can!  Free ice-lolly after each game.

AUGUST

Butterfly Watch – Sat 14th Aug 20101pm-3pm 

Free event.  Suitable for all ages.  Meet at the community building.  All equipment is provided.  This event is run in association with The Manchester Museum Butterfly Expert.  Come and spot and identify butterflies in our park.  Free refreshments will be available from the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford.

Bat Watch – Sat 28th Aug 20107pm-10pm 

Free event.  Suitable for those aged 7 and over. Meet at the community building. Dress warmly with suitable sturdy footwear for wet weather.  Due to the late start of this event it is only suitable for those aged 7 and over.  All children aged below 16 must be accompanied by an adult.  All equipment is provided.  Free refreshments will be available from the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford.

 

End of Summer family picnic – Sun 29th Aug 201012pm onwards

Free event.  Suitable for all ages.  Meet on grass outside community building.  Family picnic to celebrate the August Bank Holiday weekend.  Some refreshments available from the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford Group, if you forget yours.

 

SEPTEMBER

Community bulb planting and clean up day – Sat 18th Sep 201010am-3pm 

Free event.  Suitable for all ages.  Meet at the community building.  Come along and do a spot of light gardening – we have thousands of spring bulbs to plant or just come along and tell us what you think of the park and what improvements you would like to see. All welcome and help is much appreciated. All equipment and refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford – although you may want to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting mucky or wet [it may rain!].   This event is running as part of Clean Up The World Day and World Park Day.

 

OCTOBER

Tree Seed Gathering – Sun 3rd Oct 201010am-12pm 

Free event.  Suitable for all ages.  Meet at the community building.  Take a stroll around the park with us to collect tree seeds which we will plant up at our Tree Time event in November.  This event is run as part of the Tree Council Seed Gathering Season. All equipment will be provided by the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford – although you may want to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting mucky or wet [it may rain!].  Free refreshments will be available from the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford Group.

Free event.  Suitable for all ages.  Meet at the community building.  Event as part of the RSPBs Feed the Birds Weekend.    Come along and make bird feeding stuff to help our birds get through the winter.  All equipment will be provided by the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford – although you may want to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting mucky or wet [it may rain!]. Free refreshments will be available from the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford.

Halloween Lantern and Craft Making  – Sat 30th Oct 20102pm-4pm

£1.00 for each craft maker.  Come and make your lantern for tonight’s parade and other spooky crafts.  All equipment and refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford

Halloween Party and Lantern Parade  – Sat 30th Oct 20105pm-7pm

£1.00 per partygoer.  Meet at the community building.  Free food and drinks, party games, lantern parade and fancy dress competitions.  Prizes to be won!

NOVEMBER

Tree Time – Sun 28th Nov 201010am-12pm

Free event.  Suitable for all ages.  Meet at the community building. Run as part of the Tree Council’s National Tree Week.  Come and learn about the park’s trees and plant up tree seeds gathered earlier in the year. All equipment will be provided by the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford – although you may want to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting mucky or wet [it may rain!].  Free refreshments will be available from the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford.

DECEMBER

Christmas Carnival – Sat 4th Dec 201012pm-3pm

Free event.  Suitable for all ages.  Held in and around the community building. Come and meet Santa, raffle, tombola, second hand book stall, gift stalls, second-hand clothes stall.  Free hot food and drinks will be available from the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford.  Mulled wine and Gaelic Coffee for sale.  Carol singing for all to enjoy.

Please note that any profits or donations raised at any of our events go directly back into the event budget or park projects budget as the Friends of Victoria Park, Stretford are all volunteers.  So come along to our events and meet your neighbours, become part of the community and support our future event programme, whilst enjoying the event you are visiting.

 

The Friends second hand book stall always requires more books and we also need unwanted gift items for our tombola prizes – so if you have any that you can donate please bring them along to any of our events or you can email us at parkfriends@hotmail.com and we can try and arrange to collect them from you.
