The Friends of Victoria Park hosted its first End of Summer Sizzler event on Sunday 8/9/13.
This was a great event that involved a cooking teacher from Trafford College [Avril Povah] demonstrating how to prepare and cook a delicious home cooked BBQ. Families were given a work station where all the equipment and food was provided for them. There were laminated recipe cards and healthy cooking tips for each station and health and safety advice too. Volunteers were on hand to make sure things ran smoothly throughout the event. The families learned how to make a simple beefburger, greek salad, corn on the cob, chicken and vegetable kebabs, chocolate bananas, and a delicious mocktail. The event showed that good quality food can be made at a fraction of the cost of buying in ready made food and that the preparation time is worth it for the end result. Luckily the sun was shining all afternoon and it meant everyone was in good spirits.
Shelly Quinton-Hulme, chairperson and brains behind the event said ‘it was great to see the families working together to create the food, and the kebabs were amazing! Although this event took a lot of organising it was worthwhile and so we will certainly see about doing it again another year so more families can benefit from these brilliant cooking lessons. Thank you to Trafford Council’s LARCO funding stream for funding this event – without we could not have done it, and thanks to Trafford College who provided staff to run the event and assisted hugely in the planning of it.’
